Science
Dept. Head: Beth Dorward
The Science Department at Westminster is led by an enthusiastic, creative, and approachable team of teachers dedicated to engaging and challenging students. Our programs are designed to provide hands-on learning experiences, foster a love of inquiry, and help students develop critical thinking skills for their future pathways after high school.
Programs and Highlights
Grade 9: Students engage in a hands-on, inquiry-based "Mission to Mars" project, tackling real-world challenges such as programming rovers and building a vertical farming system.
Grade 10: Experiences include worm and frog dissections, experiments on light properties with laser security systems, and foundational chemistry skills.
The department also offers robust senior programs in chemistry, physics, and biology, ensuring diverse learning pathways, including preparation for post-secondary education and workforce development.
Workplace-level students benefit from a Grade 11/12 Environmental Science program with a hands-on focus, field trips, and experiential projects through a unique work internship opportunity.
Unique Learning Opportunities
Westminster's Science Department collaborates with Fanshawe College and the University of Western Ontario Outreach Groups for in-house workshops, field trips, and exposure to post-secondary settings. Projects also extend beyond the classroom, such as environmental studies at local streams and building school pollinator gardens.
