English
Dept. Head: Megan Moorhouse
The English program at Westminster Secondary School is designed to inspire a love of language and foster essential communication skills that students will carry with them throughout their lives. Our curriculum focuses on four key strands: reading, writing, media studies, and oral communication. Through engaging lessons and diverse learning experiences, students become skilled in analyzing literature, expressing their thoughts clearly and creatively, evaluating media texts, and participating in meaningful discussions with their peers. Our goal is to help every student become a confident and sophisticated communicator by the end of their four years of study.
In English classes, students explore a wide range of literary genres, including novels, plays, poetry, and non-fiction. Independent reading is encouraged, allowing students to select books that spark their interest and deepen their comprehension skills. Writing assignments challenge students to think critically, argue persuasively, and reflect on their personal experiences. Media studies invite students to examine the impact of digital and traditional media on society, developing a critical eye for media messages and their influence.
Oral communication activities, such as group discussions, debates, presentations, and storytelling, provide students with opportunities to articulate their ideas and listen thoughtfully to the perspectives of others. By practicing these skills in a supportive environment, students build the confidence needed to speak publicly, advocate for themselves, and collaborate effectively with others.
